Picking Your Winter Holiday Destinations

I am a sucker for sunshine, it’s where I feel the calmest. Whether you prefer sand in between your toes or beautiful scenery with snow topped mountains, nothing beats that feeling of the glistening sun against your skin; especially during those cold winter months. If you’re anything like me, you’ll get a thrill out of picking a sunny destination, jetting off and giving your summer wardrobe one last wear.

A lot of people love to jet away for winter, me included, opting for Christmas in the Caribbean, New Year’s Eve on a beach in the Indian Ocean or escaping for a few weeks during the winter months to walk bare foot in the sand. However there are places that are on my must-do list during the winter season for their snow topped roofs, outdoor pools and Jacuzzis in the snow and lastly somewhere that feels Christmassy and festive. Since my travelling game has stepped up in the last few years, I figured I’d round up my favourites and offer a recommendation for where I would want to visit for a winter getaway.

After just arriving home from Hurghada, I have thoroughly enjoyed the African sunshine. Whilst the weather definitely peaks in the summer, it is equally as beautiful during the winter months. You still get the gorgeous scenery and the views, but with a touch less heat, far less tourist and much better prices. Personally for me, the weather was spot on; hot during the day but not over baring and didn’t leave me searching for shady areas. If you’re happy to head off for a retreat with comfortable heat, then Egypt would be high on my lists of escapes.

Fortunately for us, the Australian summer is during the European winter, making it the perfect destination for a winter getaway whether you’re hoping from island to island or road tripping the East Coast, just like I did, you will not be disappointed. The east coast has the most stunning beaches which appear endless making it a firm favourite to truly relax, recuperate and re-energise either in the run up to Christmas or to destress afterwards.

Truth be told, there is never a bad time to visit Miami weather wise. However the best time to visit is from December through to May. The weather is warm, hurricane season hasn’t started and the humidity of the summer has fully arrived. That being said if you are planning a vacation during high season, plan ahead. Flights and hotels tend to book up fast and prices can get pretty high the closer you get to the season, so book early.

New Zealand

Like Australia, you can experience a completely different Christmas or New Years with a BBQ (or how they say barbie) and party on the beach. I certainly feel everyone should visit, see it and experience it at least once in their lifetime. I got the best of both worlds with snow capped mountains and the sun in the sky. It was a real beauty.

New York

Visiting New York City during Christmas season  has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember, mainly because of Home Alone 2 and my desire to see the big Christmas tree, which by the way did not disappoint. New York is a great destination year-round, with endless dinning possibilities, Broadway shows to attend and more than enough streets to wander down and get lost in the magic of the concrete jungle. But come Christmas season with the crisp winter air and bright lights twinkling throughout Manhattan, it’s time to cue the holiday jingles where the best attractions transform into festive winter extravaganzas!
