I recently took on the project of renovating my bedroom and before I could get my hands on all of the pretty furnishings, I had to go through all of my things (&damn, there was a fair bit) and essentially get rid of sh*t I did not want or need – including my wardrobe. This sparked the idea of ‘How to declutter your wardrobe’ which I did so well on, probably a little too well as it left my shelves pretty bare.

I left it that way for a few weeks, giving me the chance to reflect on gaps in my wardrobe and what I actually missed, rather than impulse buying. I’ve realised as time goes on, that however much I love the statement pieces in my closet,

the basics are my real ‘go to’ clothing that I wear day in and day out – when my shelves were bone dry, they were my saving grace.

There the mix and match items that I can team with almost anything in my wardrobe, there the block colour pieces that can dress up or down my look and they are the classic wardrobe staples that I reach for time and time again.

I think there are a multitude of translations when we consider what our personal basics are, but for me there are a few key pieces in my wardrobe that I would encourage anyone to invest in – a capsule wardrobe within a wardrobe perhaps?

Whether you go for classic black or heritage-inspired checks, a longline blazer will see you through every season. Throw it on over work separates and dresses during the day, then pair with jeans or wet look leggings and heels come evening. A blazer thrown over pretty much any look will finish off things perfectly. It’s also my go to when I’m not feeling my best but want to look great or when I mean business.

If there’s one easy to style item you should invest in for pretty much any season in the year, it should be a slightly oversized, round neck white tee. Perfect to wear with that killer suit and still looks amazing with your favourite jeans and heels. A key addition to any wardrobe no matter what your style, the perfect white t-shirt is the gift that keeps on giving. Plus if its a stable in Victoria Beckham’s wardrobe, then it’s a stable in mine too.

It can be hard to find that right shade of blue and the perfect cut to make you feel great, but when you do – hold onto those babies for dear life! A great pair of classic blue denim will serve you so well and will be a core piece of anyone’s wardrobe, they will take you through every season as they are simply classic. Easy to dress up with your ‘goes with everything’ heels and easy to dress down with your trusty converse. There are so many choices; boyfriend, skinny, straight and mom but whichever style leaves you strutting down the high street like you own it is the pair you should consider part of your wardrobe basics.

And my signature style must-have is a pair of loafers. It doesn’t matter if we’re talking designer or high street, loafers is something you will never regret adding to your closet. A pair of loafers will be your ‘go to’ shoe for the office, coffee mornings, date nights and everything in-between. Loafers are the perfect piece in finishing an outfit effortlessly, whether it be street style paired with your favourite jeans, a white tee and a leather jacket or a bold head to toe all black look; you can never go wrong with a pair of loafers.

Cashmere is the most versatile of knitwear, making it an investment worth every penny. It is basically the cosiest jumper with the biggest advantage being that it is not as thick as a chunky knit, making it the perfect piece for layering. Team it with work trousers, skirts and blazers, or use it to smarten up weekend denim. A grey cashmere sweater is always effortlessly elegant.
